Summary, etc Captain James Cook, acknowledged master navigator, map-maker and scientific observer charted many of the navigation routes of the world. He crossed the Antarctic Circle for the first time in history, claimed New Zealand and Australia for the British Empire, located the Great Barrier Reef and discovered and named countless islands in the South Pacific. His achievements were amazing in the 18th century when navigation depended on men alone and technology provided only a few tools, such as the sextant, for them to use. Going into the unknown made Captain Cook's entire life an amazing adventure at a time when many people never traveled more than a few miles in their own country.
