Summary, etc In August of 1521 the city of Tenochtitlan, the magnificent center of the Aztec tribute empire, fell to Spaniards, led by hernando Cortes, and a shifting coalition of Indian allies. It is the people of that city in their last unthreatened years who are the subjects of this study.
