Boccaccio's masterpiece, The Decameron, consists of 100 stories organized to the impression of a total view of society. In the book seven young ladies and three young men flee an outbreak of the plague in Florence in 1348. They live together in the countryside for two weeks and amuse themselves by telling stories of love and adventure. Each day they choose a king or queen who determines the theme of the stories. Boccaccio's stories influenced Geoffrey Chaucer and Dante.
