The book grew out of the author's own experiences as a ranch hand in the Sacramento River Delta country northeast of San Francisco. Thoroughly enjoyable reading, it is also a valuable description of the modern cattle industry, which, as Easton puts it, does not so much raise cattle as manufacture them, turning "beef into dollars as fast as Henry Ford turned cars off the assembly line"
