ABOUT THIS BOOK -- Most books about New Mexico painters focus on "the Taos artists of the early 20th century, successful but generally traditional in their romantic-realist techniques and subject matter." This book "is the first to examine modern painting in New Mexico from a stylistic viewpoint -- not just a geographical or historic one," describing the work and careers of twenty modernist painters. Some, like Marsden Hartley, Stuart Davi, and Edward Hopper worked in the state briefly. Others settled permanently in the state -- Andrew Dasburg, Raymond Johnson, and, of course, Georgia O'Keeffee. "By placing southwestern art in a national context, this book adds a new dimension to the history of the region" and new perspectives to modernism painting in general. BOOK DETAILS -- cloth over boards with a sewn binding; issued with dustjacket; 238 pp; color and b&w illustrations throughout; 22 pp of bibliographic information.
