Joel Frank Van Sant III was born 16 July 1885 in Hammonton, New Jersey. His parents were Joel Van Sant II and Hannah Emma Rockhill. He married Mary Bunting Mathis 19 May 1910. They had one son, Joel Nicholas Van Sant IV (1911-1997), who married Mary Foy in 1936 in Panguitch, Utah. They had two children.
