Art Pendragon, owner of the Keystone Ranch, has called a special meeting of the ranchers to address the problem of rustling. The gang and its suspected leader, Flynt Matlin, appear to be operating out of the fortified Gorre Valley. It'll take a small army to batter its way into the valley, and casualties are sure to be high. As a result, people are hesitant to fight.
But when the rustlers daringly raid a picnic of women and children, kill a Keystone rider, wound another, and take Gwen Pendragon and the rest of the women and children hostage, war is immediately declared.
