Presentation inscription from Western American author E. A. Brininstool to a life-time friend, L. H. Spragle of Cresco, Pennsylvania. "To my good old pal of frontier days, when we dodged the 'Kid' down on the Rio Bonita, after shooting it out with his gagng. E.A. Brininstool ('Buckskin Pete'), Los Angeles, April 15, 1933, to L. H. Spragle, Cresco, PA." A facsimile letter appears on page x1 from John W. Poe to E. A. Brininstool, dated March 5, 1923, in which Poe advised Brininstool as to the actual time and date that the "Kid" was killed.
For fifty years a fog of mystery has hung over the death of Billy the Kid, and legends of his escape have been persistent. Many years after his death, Deputy Sheriff John W. Poe, who was just outside the door when Sheriff Pat Garrett killed him, wrote out the whole story, which was published in a small edition. Now, this first hand account is offered to a larger public, with an introduction by Maurice Garland Fulton, who has lived for years among the scenes of Billy the Kid's wild career. Jacket
