Ever since she was a young girl, Melinda Gordon (Hewitt) has been able to see and talk to dead people. Living in a small town with her paramedic husband (Conrad) and running an antique store, Melinda is sought out by Earth-bound spirits who have yet to cross over to the other side. They seek her help in communicating and resolving unfinished business with the living. The pilot episode features the ghost of a soldier killed in Vietnam who seeks Melinda's help in communicating with his surviving son.
