McKuen himself describes Valentines as "a prelude to modern romance, that interval between love and death." The same sonnet sequence that describes "terrible letter A" as standing for AIDS, anorexia, Alzheimer's, alcohol, and so on has an off-the-wall and funny tribute to Ginger Rogers. Old images are mixed with new as he explores the many aspects of love wished for, in progress, and gone awry. His sketches of characters in "Gallery" read like a Who's Who of everyone each of us knows or has encountered personally. Whether mournful, wry, whimsical, or passionate, the poems are honest, striking, and inventive. The works here span thirty years of writing, some familiar but most brand new. Valentines is another unusual, moving, funny, provocative, eyebrow-raising (and lowering) visit with Rod McKuen.
