In 1680 the Pueblo Revolt involved nothing less than the defeat and rout of the then most powerful European presence in the New World, the Spanish Empire by a collection of Indian tribes who did not even speak the same language. The Pueblo Indians lived in what is now northern New Mexico, a region that had been incorporated inot the empire of Spain for eighty-two peaceful years. But all that changed. Within a few short weeks an entire province of the Spanish overseas empire was swept clean of the hated conquerors. And for twelve long years the Pueblos kept the Spaniards at bay, defeating each and every attempt to deprive them of the independence and to recapture their lands.
