The Bent brothers formed the vanguard of American expansion to the west. Bent's Fort - their great adobe castle on the banks of the Arkansas - was the focal point of expansion and exploration, of diplomacy and of trade. The Bent's Fort branch of the Santa Fe trail, and the Taos trail provided a path for American settlers westward. This also was the beginning of the end of Spanish rule and influence in the western lands.
